A laser printer can be attached serially, or over the network. For network attached printers, you'll get better control (including jam recovery and the ability to reprint specific pages) if your printer also supports PJL (which is accessed via SNMP commands - so if there is a firewall between your host and the printer, make sure SNMP (UDP) traffic can pass bi-directionally between the printer and your HP3000. If your printer doesn't support PJL (or you can't get SNMP traffic over the network between your HP3000 and printer) you can disable the PJL control in the !NPCONFIG.PUB.SYS file (use 'pjl_supported = FALSE' and 'jam_recovery = FALSE'). Most people utilize HP's JetDirect cards in network attached printers which need to communicate with the HP3000. Note that these cards communicate over the network on TCP port 9000 or so, and any firewalls in between need to be told to pass this traffic. Some other network attached print spooling devices and cards can be made to work as well. Be sure to check which network port the card uses; in particular some multi-printer devices use a separate TCP port for each printer hooked up to the device (i.e. something like 9001, 9002, 9003, etc). -- Main.ChrisBartram - 02 Feb 2007
